The NAUI INSTRUCTOR CROSSOVER COURSE (ICC) is designed to train and qualify current non-NAUI recreational scuba instructors to train diving students and register them for NAUI certification. During the course, candidate instructors learn effective methods to teach skin and scuba diving in compliance with NAUI Diving Course Standards.
Academic Requirements (approx 27 hours)
The instructor candidate will be given in-depth exposure in the following areas:
- Methods of Instruction
- Practical Instruction
- Diving Safety
- The Business of Diving Instruction
- NAUI Standards and Procedures
- General (course orientation, exams, review)
Skill Requirements (approx 5 hours)
(A) Oral Presentations
Present 11 graded oral presentations consisting of:
- 6 classroom teaching presentations
- 1 confined water session briefing
- 2 open water briefings
- 2 open water debriefings
(B) Open Water Training
A minimum of 3 open water days is required. NAUI instructor candidates are to demonstrate satisfactory knowledge, skills, fittness and attitude to teach skin and scuba diving in accordance with NAUI Diving Course Standards. At the Course Director's discretion, any skill requirements from prerequisite NAUI courses may be used to qualify a candidate for certification as NAUI Instrcutor.
(C) In-water Presentations
Present 6 graded in-water presentations consisting of:
- 3 graded confined water teaching presentations
- 3 graded open water teaching presentations
(D) Diving Skills and Rescue Skills
Candidates are to perform evaluated demonstrations of skin and/or scuba skills as well as open water rescue.
Prerequisites:
- Medical Approval – Verification of good physical condition as documented by a medical examination and unconditional approval for diving by a licensed physician within the preceding 12 months.
- Diver Certification - Be currently certified NAUI Assistant Instructor or NAUI Divemaster; or a NAUI PREP Course graduate within the past 12 months.
- Equipment - Provide and be responsible for own instructor-level divind equipment suitable for teaching in open water.
- Experience - Documentation of diving experience with a minimum of 50 logged open water dives. Dives shall be varied in environment, depth and activities.
