The NAUI DIVE MASTER rating is the first level NAUI leadership certification. This course is designed to train experienced and knowledgeable divers to organize and conduct safe and enjoyable open water dives for certified divers. A NAUI divemaster is also qualified to organize and conduct NAUI Recognition and Experience Programs and award appropriate recognition materials to participants; as well as assist a NAUI instructor in diving courses.

Course Contents:

Academic Requirements (approx 20 hours)

Students are to be provided with the knowledge needed to organize and conduct minimal risk open water dives as a Divemaster. Practical, on-site demonstrations by the instructor or staff are to be presented wherever possible. The divemaster candidate will be given in-depth exposure to the following areas:

  • NAUI Standards and Procedures
  • Divemaster Duties
  • Divemaster Legal Responsibilities
  • Shore Diving and Boat Diving
  • Emergency Procedures
  • Night and Limited Visibility Diving
  • Open Water Rescue
  • Deep and Decompression Diving
  • Underwater Environment
  • Equipment

Examinations:

A written examination of 100 multiple-choice questions.

Skill Requirements (approx 10 hours)

(A) Water Skills

  • Swimming skills
  • Skin diving skills
  • Rescue skills
  • Scuba skills (both in confined and open-water)

(B) Open Water Training

A combination of diving and divemastering for a total of 10 open water dives is required involving on-site instruction, demonstrations by the course director and student divemaster performance. “Performing as a divemaster,” does not necessarily require that the student divemaster complete a particular dive as defined in these standards to meet the learning objective for the activity.

Prerequisites:

  1. Medical Approval – Verification of good physical condition as documented by a medical examination and unconditional approval for diving by a licensed physician within the preceding 12 months.
  2. Age – Minimum age is 18 years
  3. Diver Certification - The preferred minimum certification level is the NAUI Assistant Instructor. Individuals not possessing the preferred certification may be accepted for training only if they meet the following criteria:

    Certification: Certification as NAUI Master Scuba Diver and NAUI Scuba Rescue Diver or their equivalent. Divers with evidence of equivalent training and experience may be enrolled provided they pass the NAUI Master Scuba Diver written examination with a minimum score of 75%

    Experience: Documentation of diving experience with a minimum of 50 logged open water dives. Dives shall be varied in environment, depth and activities.

  4. CPR & First Aid Certification – Current certification or verified competency in CPR and First Aid is required.
  5. Administrative Requirements
    - Submit a complete course application.
    - Provide and be responsible for dive gear suitable for open water.
    - Provide all required texts and materials.
    - Complete & submit a NAUI membership application (US$115) upon completion of all certification requirements.
